JESSE COTRISS WINS GRELAK MECHANICAL
SPORTSMAN NATIONALS AT RANSOMVILLE;
BICKNELL, BORKENHAGEN, AND KUMM ALSO
COLLECT WINS
Friday, August
07, 2009
Ransomville, NY
Great weather
greeted fans and
drivers last
Friday night as
Ransomville
Speedway
completed its
fifteenth show
of the 2009
season. The
Original Pizza
Logs Sportsman
took center
stage for the
annual Grelak
Mechanical Lucas
Oil fifty lap
Sportsman
Nationals.
Pete
Bicknell of St.
Catharines, Ont
took top honors
last Friday
night aboard the
thirty lap
Mighty Taco
Modified main
event. Bicknell
took the lead
away from Todd
Gordon on lap
eight and
quickly pulled
away from the
field. Bicknell
withstood a few
caution flag
periods enroute
to the win.
Chad Brachmann,
Mat Williamson,
Robbie Krull,
and Jeff
McGinnis rounded
out the top
five.
Current
points leader
Todd Burley must
feel like August
is his month of
doom as disaster
stuck for him
once again. As
many will
remember Burley
led the points a
year ago into
the month of
August but
dismal finishes
allowed Bicknell
to close the
margin. On the
final night
Bicknell would
beat Burley by
one marker for
the title. This
past Friday
Todd was in the
wrong place at
the wrong time
as he was
involved in two
separate
incidents both
of which sent
him pitside to
the attention of
his crew.
Burley
rebounded to a
top ten finish
maintaining his
points lead over
Bicknell.
Jesse
Cotriss brought
home the
checkered aboard
the Grelak
Mechanical
Sportsman
Nationals /
Lucas Oil
Shoot-out fifty
lap main.
Cotriss was in
the right place
at the right
time as he
inherited the
lead on lap
thirty-three
after current
leader Ryan
Susice suffered
a right front
flat. Cotriss
was able to pull
away from the
remainder of the
field on the
restart and take
home the $1500
compliments of
Grelak
Mechanical.
Steve
Schumacher, Don
Spatorico, Tyler
MacPherson, and
Brad Rouse
rounded out the
top five.
A total of
twenty-five cars
took the green
aboard the fifty
lap main with
Susice in
command. Cotriss
applied pressure
on Susice but it
was Susice
hanging on up
front. Susice
appeared to be
well on his way
to another
feature win
however a flat
tire on lap
thirty-three
side-lined the
current
Ransomville
Speedway points
leader. Cotriss
took over the
top spot and
held it the
remaining
distance.
Schumacher came
on strong in the
late going
advancing to
second before
time ran out.
Spatorico came
from deep in the
pack to finish
in third.
Derrick
Borkenhagen took
the win aboard
the first
fifteen lap Ki-Po
Chevrolet
Streetstock main
event.
Borkenhagen had
lost the points
lead the week
prior however by
virtue of his
win he vaulted
back on top
looking for his
first points
title. It was
Borkenhagens
third win of the
season. Don
Rappleyea, Chris
Burek, Brandon
Sherwood, and
Ricky Washburn
rounded out the
top five.
Stuart Kumm
became the
seventeenth
different winner
aboard the Ki-Po
Chevrolet
Streetstock
division. Kumm
took the lead on
lap seven and
held off
persistent
challenges by
Scott Krull
through the
final laps
enroute to the
win. Krull, Mike
Greenawalt, Jon
Richael, and
Webb Nashwinter
rounded out the
top five.
